Hi all,

I wonder if anyone can help me. I have an old stihl 039 saw. I used it today and the chain and bar seemed to be running a bit dry. Can anyone tell me when I open the oil adjustment screw underneath the saw does it stop when it reaches fully open ? as I don't want to over do it . Many thanks, Tom

I have one and its never oiled well mine is wide open. may pay to clean the pick up pipe and make sure no one has left bio in it for along time. The screw should stop when its wide open.

I'm not sure if this is recommended practice (i.e. it probably isn't!) but if you run down the chain oil and then run a tankfull of petrol through the oil tank it is very effective at flushing out anything that will dissolve. If it's blocked by bigger bits though you will have to take it apart and poke it through.

p.s. it doesn't do anything useful if you try this the other way - i.e. put a tankfull of chain oil in the petrol tank......

We were told to wash out the oil tank with neat petrol but don't run the saw or it'll catch fire

I guess it is possible if the chain is tight on the bar and you get enough heat to vapourise the petrol.

I flush the tank with fuel and have run the saw up without a bar and chain on it to see if the fuel will be pulled through - worth a quick try - best done outside though.

Other than this - strip it down but take it carefully, the oil pump is connected to a weak plastic extrusion that comes out of the plastic engine cradle - not a great design but works OK.

It is possible the pump has a bit of wood chip plugging it - a common issue on all saws!
