Helmet for cross-cutting firewood?

Not wanting to sabotage the other current PPE-related thread, should I be wearing head protection while cross-cutting on a saw-horse? I don't use any at the moment (just ballistic trousers/gaiters/gloves and eye/ear protection), and I'm not sure that I can see where the saw would contact my head...

:confused1:

I think the helmet is to protect the head from falling debris when felling, not sure how they stand up to impact from a running saw chain (although something has got to be better than nothing). On this basis I don't think you need the helmet for cross-cutting, only the eye and ear protection you're wearing.

I'm willing to be corrected though.

the peak on the helmet could prove vital protection in the event of kickback, although thats unlikely on a horse

This should come with a health warning of course, you shouldn't use a chainsaw whilst on a horse, or anywhere near a horse for that matter, anything could happen, they're unpredictable at the best of times.

Lol:biggrin:

You're supposed to wear a helmet on a horse, as for using a chainsaw on one, I'm not sure of restrictions, I'd wear a lid just incase

I've heard a local chap had his head open up like a tin can. Even when I do the odd bit of carving I make sure my lids on. (face and ear protection there anyway). I'm still recovering from zipping 2 of my fingers with a saw. Don't think I'll be able to play my guitars the same way again so I've had my warning.

Hope that helps.
