veteran black poplar pollarding

First off, does anyone know how black pops respond to pollarding especially big veterans?

the reason i ask is i have looked at one today (pics to follow) its a beast, at chest height its about 4ft by 7ft, at about 9ft up it splits into two trunks and these have started to split apart with a split running down to about 3ft above the ground :scared1:, basically there is the possibility of funding to pollard it, its not a safety risk as its well away from any targets, but it would seem a shame to let it fall over, the site has no access except for on foot so a mewp isn't an option, the height was hard to judge but 100ft plus and the two trunks are probably about 3ft dbh just above the main base. oh and just for good measure there are a few cavities in the base so bat survey will be required, but its solid timber not like its going to fall over imminently.

basically anyone that fancies a challenge and has nuts the size of watermelons pm me :001_cool:

don't worry i think the timber can stay on site! its near Ashbourne in Derbyshire there is space at the site to just drop the tops although im not convinced this would prevent further damage to the base. I will hopefully post pics tomorrow or saturday

sounds like the job for a razor 046, these things cut like butter. I hammered one similar a few years back, maybe not the girth but certainly tickled 90feet. It will come back i think, but something needs to be done by the sounds of it. Is there anything under ir, or can it be done from the fork in 2 cuts.

I"ll do it for you Charlie, Mr Ed an I pollarded and felled over a hundred manchester pops last year. I'm sure he'll get some pics up for you.

The trees we pollarded at 4 metres were basically standing deadwood, there was little expectation of them ever regrowing, although they all had a bacterial leaf disease.
