Only 17 known records of it here in the Uk.

FRDBI has it mostly listed as associated with Pinus. But a third of those listed as with 'coniferous'. Roger Phillips suggests that it is associated with 'coniferous'.

Suggests or 100 % certain documents R. torulosa from Picea and/or other coniferous trees than Pinus ? According to Breitenbach & Kränzlin and other European Russula specialists, it's only associated with Pinus.

I think I mean seperate infections (by same species of fungi) being at work in different parts (localities) of the tree at the same time.

Could be, but could also be the same mycelium "rising" up inside the tree without in that phase producing other outside symptoms of its presence (yet) as the FB's, which are formed by decomposing cellulose (energy) of the dead wood (and vinegar acid rich sapwood) by the mycelium.

Found these beauties either side of a Whitebeam. First time they have shown a fruiting body to my knowledge. Tree is very old and stem dia is approx 18". Am I close in thinking its some kind of Mazegill Phaeolus schweintzii maybe? But my book says Dyers Mazegill occurs on conifers, no mention of hardwoods.
