Scleroderma areolatum - Leopard Earthballs, along exposed root of a Birch

 

Couple of differing forms of Piptoporus betulina -Birch Poypore, on a dead monolith. (posted earlier on Dual Decay thread)

 

and the last four are Daedeolopsis confragosa - Blushing Bracket, on a fallen Birch.

A couple more of the pereniporia fraxina, now that the tree is down. Somehow managed to not take a pic of the stump, as the effects of the fungi was clear to see. A trip back soon is on the cards- job only 1 mile away at the neighbour's house.

 

 

 

 

There were signs of the decay 1/3 way into the trunk where the largest part of the FB was, the first two pics, on a approx20" dia trunk, and where the FB was only the size of a fist it was about 2" into the trunk. In the worst area the wood was spongy and honeycomb like that i could dig the nylon wedge in easily. The unaffected wood was excelent though, even though the tree has been dead for 12 months at least. The roots that i could get to were pretty shot, and the heart of the stump had a small hole in the centre that led to a wet cavern judging from poking a twig down it. Immediately above the FB's the bark looked fine, as you can see in the pics, that wasnt the case where the FBs were.

No i was in a hurry.....still feel a bit wary of touching unknown funghi without knowing what they are. And dont really like removing them unless its a necessity. Should maybe change my philosophy on this one? Hopefully back in the park on Monday so will check them out again
