Over the last ten years Mallorca’s palm trees have been suffering from an invasion of the Picudo Rojo, a weevil or snout beetle known by its Latin name as Rhynchophorus ferrugineus. The beetle is a quite attractive looking insect but in its effect on palm trees from the Phoenix canariensis to Phoeniceae and Washingtonia, it is quite devastating. One can rarely see the beast as it is deeply burrowed into the heart of the palm tree. When one sees that the palm tree has dead and dry leaves the damage is already done and the tree can not be saved. Sadly, no remedy is known to prevent the disease from spreading. Some experts say that in twenty years time there will be no palm trees left in Mallorca. Very disheartening.

All treatments on the market are not guaranteed. The best way is to treat the trees is to pour a solution into the centre of the crown. There are lots of different types of solutions and nobody really knows which is best.

Other people drill into the trunk of the tree and inject chemicals. A company has been taken to court for doing this because they used to much and killed loads of trees.

Read nosed beetle is making a lot of victims here too. It was found for the first time in 1994 in Spain. In 2004 there was the first case in Italy.

It is causing a lot of troubles from south to north, especially in Sicily, Liguria, Lazio and Campania, Spreading to other areas like Puglia and Sardegna as well.

As you were saying there are many different treatments on the market and many different opinions on which one is the most effective. They still have to find it, even if someone is having good results.

An hard battle.

Nice thread Deeco.

Hope you enjoy there. Best of luck :001_smile:

It is a real shame everywhere you look there are dead palms. It's not a nice part of the job cleaning up after the beetles.I like to look back on a day and think of how much better the trees we worked on looked and how healthy they were, turning up to jobs with rotten stumps and grubs everywhere is tough to take. With all the trees dying its means less work to go around and there are only going to be so many stumps to take down after that who knows what will happen.
