I said okay whats your problem then he said this hedge hasnt been trimmed since the war and furthermore if i was younger i would give you both a damn good hiding.I did laugh about that one!!!!!

Hi Scotty,

I think that that is exactly why he does it.

Chippers are ultimately just labour saving devices.

When i'm chipping i'll be putting 5 or 6 inch bits through my TW150 (as I don't sell on logs). This takes seconds per branch.

When i'm working for my father (who does sell logs) he'll be dressing it down to 2 to 3 inches. This takes minutes per branch.

Times that difference by how many branches in the tree and it can add a considerable amount of time, and also p1sses off the climber!

Ok thanks again. I had sort of made the assumption he was being paid to leave anything of x" behind for fuel but was chipping it regardless. If someone says "Can you leave xxx behind" then surely the answer is either "yes", or "yes but it's £x extra", or even "No, because.....". Surely it's not "yes" but then chip it when their back's turned because it's easier.... :001_smile:

Have to say I hate people I don't know calling me "mate" especially shop assistants, tradesmen etc.

It's like this, you say to a client "we'll chip up the small stuff and log up what too big to go through the chipper" to which they agree.

Then when they see 6" or more diameter going through the chipper they get all funny and want you to log up the smaller stuff. This would involve more time and effort so you say something like "ok we'll try and do that" make a big show of saving a couple of branches then when they go inside or get bored and leave you ram as much as you can through.

Gets you on to the next job/in the pub/on the sofa quicker
