I must admit, I was a bit worried about posting the photo, but it is interesting to hear that others have been in the same situation.

I did explain before carrying out the work that it would be of no benefit to the tree really and that it would look awful for a couple of years.

My professional advice to the customer was to remove the re-plant as the tree was leaning toward the house and was particularly overbearing in that particular part of the garden.

The customer had other ideas.... what can I say..

I drove a long way to do the job, which was originally going to be a dismantle and take down and when I got there she had all these big ideas about what she wanted done. The only thoughts about the work to me were that there's twice as much effort and time involved in doing this monstrosity of a job than it would have been to just docter it up and chog it down.

This is the first time i've been caught like this, and I think in future I may well walk away. Reason being that to me, I'm only as good as my last job.

I did a thread will a poll a while back, the majority of members (who participated in the poll) said they would carry out topping and lopping, IF the customer would not allow a better option and would only get it done by someone else if they refused.

The thread seems to have been removed, not sure why.

Quite right, we moan about not being taken seriously as a profession, and then do things like that. Whatever happened to client confidentiality?

Agreed it,s not good to stitch anyone up. It,s a shame customers dont see it the same way, the ones that swear blind there,s no tpo, or it does,nt matter as it,s not an oak etc etc.

i had to butcher a tree on friday, roadside in edinburgh, the guy wanted it out and his wife didn't. it was suitably butchered. there were some hung broken branches that needed taken out but it was a old oak and it should have been left. apparently we are being asked back next year to prune it again. madness

VERY, VERY, unprofessional , IMO.

You have "privileged information", if the customer had known you were going do that, they would not have told you.

IMO, you should advertise that if you feel a tree need saving you will go behind their backs and tell the authority's, that way the customer can decide whether or not they wish too give you the information.

I thought we were supposed to do right by the tree. Recently a chap rings up asks for a site meeting, he asks if I would destroy 15 mature Oak trees before he puts in for planning. If you boys think I was wrong to dob him in your in the wrong job

I just call the LA and ask about any TPO at the address.

I refuse to go into detail as to my reasons for asking, or go into the town hall and ask to see the map, it is a document that you have a "right" to see. :001_smile:

Those who feel that more trees need TPOing, why not start contacting you LA with the addresses of nice trees you feel should be protected.

But not you clients without the their consent

If you think it was right to dob him in you're in the wrong job. We get paid to cut trees. If you want to be a tree hugger then go over to the other side and work as a tree officer.

You dont see defence lawyers standing up in court and saying, actually your honour, my client did bash his wife wife the poker so i'm not going to defend him any more.

You do the best job you can do for your client, and if your conscience cant handle that then you are in the wrong profession.

Please tell me the last time you cut a tree "for it's own benefit"?

Trees have managed for millions of years before we started hacking them.

IMO, to think much of our work benefits trees is arrogant in the extreme!

Much of the time we are trying to limit the damage to the tree and still keep people happy.
