Quick tyre question.

I've put 215 65 r16 mud terrains on the back of my ivecos (usual tyre size 195 75 r16) and they fit well. Overall radius is very similar - 205 80 would have been a lot taller.

I don't understand this bloody malarky at all! No figures on my rims.

 

Wouldn't 215 be 30mm wider than 185, and therefore be too wide for the rim?

 

Obviously it doesn't work quite like that?

Confusing isn't it.

 

There are three numbers eg 225 50 r16

The first number is the width of the tyre in mm's.

The second is the percentage of that width that the tyre is deep.

eg 50% xx 225= 112.5mm

 

The third figure is the diameter of the wheel in inches.

So the overall diameter is 16 inches + 2x (to convert radius to diameter) 112.5mm

it depends the rims tend to suite a range of tyre widths but if you were to put a tyre to wide for the rim and you had a blow out or an acident it gives the old bill and insurance companys more weight not to pay out and to prosicute ( they have nothing better to do )

I'm also concerned that if the width is too wide on the rears, which are doubles, then rubbing may be an issue.

i always find rubbing that leads to chaffing is an issue !

Have a look at a front wheel rim.

 

There should be some numbers between the wheelnuts.

 

Something like 5J x 16

Im confused with all these numbers do we think it would fit on the dual wheels or not? Ive always been told i couldnt have offroad tyres because they would rub. Maybe they would be closer together and stop getting dirty great big flints stuck inbetween the dual wheels! They sure make a bang when they fly out!

Take it the clean up was only a quickie? Maybe more elbow grease or panama cigar style, jack rear up at one side, strap a wire brush on a shaft secured to body side with wire brush over hub. Engage gear enjoy cigar. Read rim.
