Hitch Hiker thread.

Recommended Posts

Liking that second foot ascender, the ascent in the video looked smooth as! Great for long ascents.

I've been foot locking a lot lately and advancing the hitchhiker manually, it's ok but because the HH system is short you can only make short runs!! I did see someone attach an extra length/tether to the HH and back to the harness and advance it that way which would be miles better!! Just not efficient in small ascents. Ft ascender and Hand holds is more effective like that!!

Gerbutt, where did you get the 60m Kern from?

do you have a link pls?

I got it from a shop called treekit. I think it's a relatively new place. The bloke I dealt with was called max and was really sound. When the rope arrived there was also a copy of their catalog, they seem to have everything!!

Timberwolf190, I like that in theory but I guess you have to keep all that stuff on your left leg whilst working.

These quite good ideas are the stepping stones to really great ideas. Well done!

No, left leg gear is just for a long ascent. I havnt spent enough time in the chandlers looking for a less fiddley alternative to the mini shackles currently used. At mo have to unscrew one shackle (without dropping pin!) then just release the foot harness.. Not exactly arduous but not ideal. :-)

It's good. Looking forwards to the development.

Adam, the HH works great on a tether. When you flick the HH quickly up the rope, the weight of the unit will carry it to the tether's end and it will lock off with almost no setback. Things to watch out for, though, is the tether length needs to be just long enough to work but not so long you can't reach the hitch and because you will be using the carabiner for a handle, make sure it is oriented so when you grab hold of it your grip and pull does not activate the gate lock.

After the right length was found, I had a short tether made with tight eyes. With a carabiner on both ends it is quick to switch from the bridge ring to tether and back as needed.

I have been using the

new HAAS knee ascender Tree Stuff - HAAS Ascent System and it is the best setup for a knee ascender I have ever used. It is much smaller and more compact when you are holding it than it looks like in the pics and vids.

...Out of curiosity have you tried adding a foot loop onto the HH also in tether mode? Like a frog walk system.

No, I have not. I'm not a real fan of those kind of setups for what we do. They are great for access and kind of awkward for everything else.
