Fire place mantle

Inspired by past threads like this one, i got a little project on the go whilst I had some free lunch hours at work over the last few months.

The Oak had to come down for fairly obvious reasons, so took the oportunity to mill and plane a lump with some borrowed kit.

We designed the brackets and had them made by a local steel art worker up in Suffolk.

Really pleased with the outcome.

Focus Fireplaces supply the fireplace trade with beams, surrounds etc with different finishes. All made to order in whatever size you want. Not cheap.

For cheap then DIY, timber needs to be dry of course. When installing be aware of your stoves top combustible clearance, this can be found in the installation instructions. This will be at least 400mm and most will be 500-600mm.

If the inside of the beam is exposed to the flue pipe the combustible clearance to the flue pipe is three times its diameter, so 15" (375mm) or 18" (450mm). If you do not have this then the inside can be fireproofed with a strip of fire proof board.

paul smith, yours looks a bit tight perhaps, certainly needs checking.

A

With regards to the fire proofing material what do you recommend for this?

Cheers

That's nice David. Is that the tree you used the mobile crane on? I've done the same with mine, used the tree that I did my first crane and hiab job on to make one so have a bit of personal value as well

Cheers,

We try to keep as many of these oaks standing for their cultural and ecological value, but when the time comes to remove them it's nice to utilise a little of what we process.

When I eventually leave my job (30 years and counting :001_rolleyes:) it will be a unique small piece to remember what I used to work on and around.

Yeah it is actually four sided as it goes round in a square but you'll get the idea from this front side. We've got another one above the Rayburn in the kitchen that does the heating and water etc. Nice to make something out of a tree that I'd worked and taken down. Behind the beam in the lounge is a bit of paper with the details of the job, the crew and date so in the future if they knock the cottage down or do any work when I am gone somebody may find the piece of paper and see where it came from
