Guidlines are laid down in the aa mewp book

A Guide to the Use of MEWPs in Arboriculture

Its only £5 which would barely cover the printing.

Very good book and imo it,s what we would be called to justify against

I'm pretty sure there are several pictures in this book which clearly show two people in a basket, separated by a screen. Can't find my copy of the book just now to check.

Am I right it thinking that technically your not suppose to have 2 operators in a mewp basket if one is a chainsaw operator? The mewp is a massive 8 wheeler truck mounted with 2.4 meters wide basket? So mewp operator would be some distance away from cutter?

Hi David, hope you're well.

Not quite, however 'your' industry code of practice dictates that you should have a physical divide / barrier when both a cutter and operator are in the same bucket.

Failing that, production of a detailed Risk Assessment / Method Statement explaining what other measures you are employing to achieve an equivalent level of control should be undertaken and the size of the bucket / distance from cutter is a good starting point (as is method of working, i.e. operator stays with the controls and perhaps the lanyard used ensures this, as is PPE, i.e. chainsaw jacket for the operator unless he/she is chainsaw 'qualifed' and maybe anyway if you have one etc. etc.)

The above 'suggestion', whihc is the norm when you are veering form published guidance, will only ultimatley be deemed acceptable or not in the event of HSE intervention.

Hope this helps.

Cheers..

Paul

I use a mewp on a daily basis. We never have two people in the bucket. There is no need. You are not going to be cutting at the same time as cutting so I think it is a waste of a man!

I don't think I have ever seen two people in a mewp, in tree work. But each to there own..

I don't think it's a matter of 2 cutters in the basket. The original post said.....

They don't let you out on a self drive hire with the big toys so the issue will be keeping the mewp operator away from the saw.
