I've been thinking about this topic lately. I've tried to explain to my employers that I would benefit from doing the following NPTCs; medium tree felling, windblown and multiple windblown and dismantling. The latter being more important because I may save myself wear and tear by being more efficient. I have experience in all those areas so my employers say these tickets are unnecessary. I'm aware that the HSE recommend (?) having the certificate of competence relevant to each task being carried out. Is it right that my employer can dismiss this?

There is a huge difference between the law tho' and recommended " best practice ".....I think its always a good thing to refresh training tho'...I only learnt recently that additional NPTC count the same as a refresher.....if that makes sense.

For what its worth, your boss is not doing anyone any favours with that outlook....Not the progressive attitude that could so profoundly replace it!!

I agree with both your opinions. In court, NPTC qualifications are deemed tangible evidence of competency if I'm not mistaken. Doing a new course acts as a refresher because it covers general health and safety requirements and best practice. The progressive attitude is one that I am wishing was at our work place. Doing the NPTCs I need will at the very least go in the employers favour in court but it will also improve my skill and hence production. But because it is not a requirement by law (as far as I know) to have all the relevent NPTCs, my employer will avoid this expense. The maddening thing is that they pay for refresher MEWP training when we never have enough money in the budget to hire one! They also have the cheek to show off investors in people status

the real difference between obtaining a nptc CoCs at entry to the industry & the ability of a skilled tradesmen, are easliy observed by seasoned practioneers.

practise = comercial fluidness this can only come with time at work in many senarios,

competance doesnt mean excellence , it is a recognised benchmark for skills to be developed from.

Again as for what is needed in law to use a tophandled saw requires cs 39

which requires cs38 & cs30 31,

along with others such as pa1 etc

the rest is upto the individual , though letting employees loose with equipment without some training ( whether this is formalised external or in house is entirely upto the manager/owner) however if the wheel comes off & you cant evidence the training, then you could be up shite creek without a paddle
