Auger for 1.5 ton digger

Hi,

I mainly do logs but have started to do a bit of fencing work recently. I have been asked to put up a post and rail fence and was thinking of investing in an auger drive and 12inch bit for our mini digger. The digger is a 1.5 ton Takeuchi, has anyone got any experience of using these with an auger? I have hired a hand held stihl one and that was pretty hard work on your own. Have got a tractor mounted post knocker but always find with square posts they twist and can't get the accurate enough. Any advice welcome as I don't fancy hand digging.

Cheers

Jon

Get one- best investment ever for a mini digger, I have an augertorque one with 4/6/8 inch bits tugsten tipped running off a takeuchi tb016. the 8inch will go through almost any hard ground- compact shillet is the hardest work for it but compact subsoil is no bother at all, drill a 1.2m hole 8inches wide in less then a minute, always handy to have a pair of shuvholers or clapper spades just to clean any soil out the hole which doesn't get lifted out with the auger,

I did a job for another fencer the other day just drilling the wholes, I dug 20 70cm deep holes in the most compact ground in under an hour including cleaning out the holes etc.

Im not sure how well a 12inch bit would go through hard ground might struggle a bit but average soil wouldn't be a problem. If im knocking in large strainer posts into hard ground with a hydraulic postbanger i predrill all the holes first with the 4inch bit, just gives a free run for the strainer to be knocked into.

Paid £1500 for mine brand new with 8 inch bit from augertorque 3 years ago.

If you get one make sure you specify a cradle hitch, makes travelling with it alot more controled and also makes positioning the auger prior to drilling alot more accurate.

Bought a Auger torque post hole borer 4years ago great bit of kit on a fore end loader. Tell them what machine you want to put it on and they will match it up only advice I would give is get the biggest auger bit first when you buy the motor head because they tend to do a deal on the bit when selling the motor head.

:thumbup:Totally agree with all said.. Run "auger torque" unit on a kubota U15, 2bits,6 inch and 12 inch, perfect for both 5x3 motorway spec post and rail and larger auger bit great for 8x8 gate posts.. Just make sure you order the hitch unit with double pin fittings, very handle for moving just where you need it instead a using it to just dangle over the pre-marked hole area...If you dig your hole and stop turning the motor you can easily withdraw from the hole and shake the soil from the bit....very easy machines to use and very powerful too........:thumbup1:

Sorry for a bit of a derail, but could you put a logsplitter cone on and auger drive?

I have one I use on my 3.8 tonne digger. It was an ex BT one (12") that was much much longer so I cut it down & had a new plate made up that I welded on.

I have looked at getting a large screw cone to adapt it but they tend to be quite costly & I have a grab on the digger for picking the logs up & a hydro splitter on the tractor so cant justify it. I would not get a hydrocrack to fit on one as the spin speed is much slower than a pto drive.

incidently, I ran the tractor mounted splitter of the mini digger just to see what it was like, much faster and more powerfull then the tractor, Im now thinking of getting one with brackets for the mini digger to run it- uses less diesel then the tractor and i can have the grab there to do all the pre log moving/sawing up then put the splitter on and crack on! (sorry for the pun)
