Are logs worth doing anymore ?

There's at least 3 big farming estates within an 8 mile radius of me who over the past 2 or 3 years have gone into logs in a big way,they have their own harvesters,big processors,and men and log delivery trucks flying round the highways and byways.

If they drop their prices then i will stop.ime not breaking my back just to give it away,i will come in the house and put my feet up.

 

 

I just keep my price a touch cheaper per cube and offer a bigger load. One large estate last year over-priced and had to drop their prices a few times. The estate near me has thinned all they can and has to buy it in now. The harvesters are too big for whats left so i still have a job just! One consultant told me to hang in there the harvesters won't be viable for ever.

I am thinking you have alot of chopping to do but then your seasons are different to ours. Thats alot of logs

 

It's not really, just over 300 cube a month. It's only a 4 days on the processor a month. We are coming up to our busy time (beginning of summer) people buy it green for a bit cheaper. Saves having logs stuck in the yard all year.

 

We only make around $40 profit per cube (£20) so not a lot but when your turning over a large volume you can make a go of it. Also it's only a side line to coinside with our tree works.

Thats about right mate. When the big estates have cleared out all their profitable timber no doubt they'll move on to the next big grant aided moneyspinner.

As a DIY logger, just for my own personal supply, I really struggle to see how it's a viable commercial product. I go through about 5-6m3 a year, and to buy that amount from local suppliers would cost me in the region of £800. It's just too much - only a limited number of people are going to be able/willing to pay that sort of price.
