buying rope for first time - best length?

Hi all,

I may be in the market for a new rope in the near future, my current one I didn't have much choice on the length, and at 50m I suspect it's a bit long for my needs.

I haven't been climbing very long, and don't expect to be doing massive trees in the very near future! What would be the best length, I'm thinking 35m should do fine for most trees but don't really know :confused1:

Also, I'm neither here nor there on spliced eyes, my current rope doesn't have one and I'm quite happy tying knots, are there any real benefits to a splice? Never really used one so not sure.

Apologies if this has been covered before, I tried a search but couldn't find much relevant.

cheers,

Joe

I think 30/35m is a waste of time really 45m is spot on and gives you a bit more of an advantage if you ever want to redirect from the other end of your climbing line.

Marlowe Aries is a great rope for a cheap rope, but I would push the boat out a little more and get yourself some tachyon....:thumbup1:

Splice is a must it neatens up the system you use and as been mentioned offers a greater strength than a knot.

Of cause Joe this is only my personnel opinion and others may vary.............

a lot....

Adam.

Ps was good to Speak to you on the phone earlier mate.....:thumbup1:

thanks for the replies, will bear them in mind!

Forgot to say, I've already got a Gecko strop so that's sorted, it's just the main line I'm thinking about, not decided which one yet for sure... just starting to experiment with different friction hitches at the moment, as decided a prussik might not be for me. Just wanted to know what length is advised, as I don't really have much experience in this area. I suppose it's better to go slightly too long though.

cheers Adam, was good to chat about first aid, thanks for the info.
