Fleet facts magazine tells me that a new Disco diesel now costs 1.50 per mile to run, + trailer costs and extra fuel consumption. My Disco is a series 2, so little depreciation but quite expensive to maintain.

 

I am looking to base my delivery fees on 1.50 per mile there AND BACK !!. So one bag is free at 5 mile radius, so 15 miles = 10 miles each way to be paid for at 1.50 + VAT at 20%. Thats £36 inc VAT. Above that its easier to use a pallet carrier.

 

30 miles each way at £10 in total goes nowhere, it buys you a gallon and a half of diesel, pulling a trailer thats about 20 miles.

Yes and a self employed person working for minimum wage needs to charge at least £14 an hour. Most garages charge £65 - £100 ph my solicitor is currently charging me the discounted rate of £200 ph . There is very little gross profit in a load of logs without spending an extra hour delivering them for free.

It is not just £10/30 miles, but the amount I include in the log price as well, the £10 is an extra amount on top

thats exactly what i do, could be on the way to football or a meal out with the miss's etc!

she dont seem to mind to much when i have £150 cash in my hand when i get back in the truck seriously though, we have both trying to cut costs where ever we can in our respective businesses and fuel is the biggest cost for us both

I am always worried I'm not charging enough, but seem to have ok finances and thats the only way I can tell!

You can only charge what people are prepared to pay. If your making a living and happy at the moment you are doing well. Alot of people are finding the recession hard and it will get alot harder in the next 6 months especially if its a cold winter with the new taxs comming in April. Its one thing looking at government mileage charges its another thing charging them onto your customers when it comes to delivery I dont expect to make a profit but dont expect to be out of pocket and that goes for an hourly rate aswell.
