If it's dry it will burn fine in a good stove. What it will do is pick up moisture again over the winter if not stored somewhere dry. I suspect this is the main cause of it's bad rep.

 

Second that . MUST be kept in the dry . Its like a sponge if you don't. Burns fine if you do.

Thank for that info, I am totally new to wood burning. I will definately stay away from the black poplar.

Most hardwoods are okay to burn everyone has their favourite type, I have a mixture of alsorts not to fussy, I have burned dead standing poplar it's not the best but mixed in was not to bad, but as the comments say keep it off the ground on pallets or the like, to get air circulating around it, and you should leave it for a good few months to dry a bit.

Poplar burns fine in a stove, not sure about Black Poplar, maybe thats what I have burnt maybe not.

 

Secret is to get it to about 16% moisture and keep it dry. If you cut and split it on the next few weeks it should be ok to burn winter 13-14 providing you keep it dry.
