monkey puzzled?

Why is this monkey puzzle full of dead limbs? Even the ones that look healthy are starting to go brown on the tips! And some of the dead ones have small scars on them?

May just be a natural thing, I know that monkey puzzles tend to have a genetic trait of retaining dead foliage for some time before dropping (like cunninghamia and other connies) - as they mature they gradually start to shed thier lower branches giving them that characteristic 'mushroom' shaped canopy.

I have dismantled two around here that have shown the same characteristics. Both went on to die a year or two later.

I had one go completely brown and die in about 3 months. I think it started like that. Shame really as it was a big tree!

On a serious note though. Without seeing photos or the tree and knowing some history it's impossible to guess.

You're description creates a picture in my mind of some semi-brown Monkeys that I've dismantled but they may not match what you have.

I realise that's no help at all. Sorry.
