Gruffalo's child

Recommended Posts

Have been doing some carvings for a community are close to home, this was for the children's play area. Not really fat enough but it was the biggest piece of wood i could find so had to do. Thanks to Splinters for the inspiration for this piece through the Gruffalo he did earlier this year. Transporting it was amusing, he was driven through the town on the bucket of the manitou :) One of the horns got damaged when we were 'planting' him but a bit of 'evening out' and it was fine.

The kids seem to like him so that is all i wanted really. One wee girl just said "Oh, we have a gruffalelo" :) That made it all worth while. now on to the next project....

I've been admiring your work. It's great when a wee yins face lights up. Out of interest how much time did it take to do. Is it done in one shot or do you go back over several days/weeks to finish it?

I find i'm rushing things to justify my time spent away from my real job.

Thanks Simon. Gnome, I did this in my spare time too. Carvign is a hobby for me and so i take days off to do the carving OR i do some carving on Saturday. I think i spent about 10 hours or so on the gruffalo. That will include all carving and finishing/colouring but not the planning. As i have only been carving 6 or 8 months I am still a bit slow but I dont mind that. each piece i cut, i learn. I havent ever seen any one else carving (although if i make it to Carve Carrbridge this weekend I can see some of the best carving) so i have to figure out how to do things as i go along.
