do evergreen tree hedges regrow?

Sounds a silly question. We have evergreen trees cut as a hedge, its not a leylandi but similar, will post a pic if i can. i would prefer it a foot or two taller, if the top of the main trunks are cut will they ever grow up further?

I have some conifers at the front of my house. They give great privacy but are now about 12 ft high and nearly that deep. There is about 120ft of it down the side of the drive another 120ft of young trees I put in a few years ago. It takes me a day twice a year to trim and dispose of the cuttings. I may need to rip the front ones out as they have over grown the road by about 2ft. What would you guys replant with bearing in mind it needs to grow to about 9ft to block out the passing lorries. We are on well drained chalky soil.

I put it round my garden, very robust, plus can be trimmed back as hard as you like.

so basically they are more likely to grow out sideways from the green and after substantial time the branches will be big enough to grow up?

 

I have a rockery style garden and lots of bushes that have previously been heavily shaped, if left too long is it generally ok to prune back to wood for it to regrow & whens the best time to do this?
