Piston question

Help please, I am rebuilding a Husky 51 for a mate, some come with a 44mm and others 45mm piston, I measured the piston at 44mm diameter and ordered one at that size. The replacement received measures 43mm but the box it came in states 44mm??

The question, when measuring a piston do you have to allow 1mm more to compensate for the piston ring or have I received the incorrect piston in error? :confused1:

If the piston is a 44mm piston, it will measure up at around 43.95mm but not 1mm below stated diameter.

Looks like you have the wrong piston.

What is the make of the piston - some of these Chinese ones are a bit dubious!

Thanks for that, think it was called Mako, quality seemed OK, will see if I can send it back and get another!

My first choice on pistons is Meteor, the only piston I KNOW I can just fit without checking it out thoroughly, they are generally £5-10 more expensive but find myself using them more and more especially after having a few issues with some of the Chinese ones!

Meteor are Italian and have Caber rings that are used by many OEMs in their equipment - I have had issues with Chinese rings snapping and taking out ports - probably over tempered and brittle!

Where can I get a Meteor 44mm piston for a 51 from? I have seen a Episan kit on ebay are they any good?

Thanks

Ebay is the only place I can get hold of Meteor pistons so if they aren't there, you will struggle.

Episan are Turkish and look to be made very well and are a solid second choice IMO

Oh yes stay away from the cheap chinese makes.

A long time ago, before I found this site, I used one, fitted nice, fired it up and ticked over nice ran ok, left it to put a tank through it, about 2mins in it stopped dead and seized up.

The rings had snapped and badly scored the pot. Got hold of the seller and they asked if I had put the piston in the right way round! :001_rolleyes:

They sent a new pistons and rings out and also sent a pot, but I was reluctant to replace it again so it all went on the spares shelf.

This was on a stihl ms280. Never touch the things again. But now I use meteor as I have found this site and spud is always praising them up. (but I reckon he works on commission from meteor:lol:)

I know you are joking but the only reason I praise them is the fact that I have used them on many occasions and NEVER had any issues with them so pass on the good info - I work in a non arb related business.

My preference is Meteor, Episan, Golf and then Chinese and if the Chinese one was going on a quality machine would swap the rings with OEM or Caber ones and would also consider doing the same with the circlips.

The funny thing about fitting the piston the wrong way round - I had a Chinese Piston with the arrow pointing the wrong way round once:001_rolleyes: fitted it the right way round though:thumbup:

I have had them with the ends badly formed so the ring wouldnt contract in to the piston so the cylinder wouldnt fit on it.

Generally the piston size is too loose in the bore.

Rings have snapped - you live and learn and get what you pay for.

I have fitted Meteor in many members saws and all seem to be giving good service.

Under tempered for brittle - over tempered for soft ? :001_smile:
