Stihl 028 av new piston

I have an old 028av saw that has had some piston problems (probably poor fuel was the cause, not me!), the piston is totally knackered and its caused some very light scoring to the cylinder.

To buy a new piston and cylinder is very expensive and not worth it, but I have seen some copied pistons on ebay for around 20 quid and was wondering if its worth giving the cylinder a bit of an hone up and having a go at fixing it? If it doesnt work its only £20, do you think it might work or am i wasting my time? I know any scoring to a cylinder is not good But Might just give it a go as an experiment what do you think?

I've done it to a few saws pal :)

Look at spuds thread on whats on your bench today, he's done plenty.

Also look for Meteor pistons as they are good quality :)

Good luck, i'm sure you'll suss it and have your saw back working in no time!

Avoid the 'Mako' brand. Recent piston/ring lasted about 14 days. Un-awesome.

Not to hijack the thread, and probably of interest to Mattmoss anyway:

Does a Super or Woodboss (50cc/47cc I think?) 028 cylinder/piston fit the older (like mine and presumably Mattmoss') 43cc saws? Not that I'm tempted to mess with mine at the moment (compression still at over 150psi on original parts)...

Make sure the piston is the correct diameter - unbranded ones can be hit or miss, Meteor are the best IMO, Episan are good, if they are not available, Golf are OK - if you are fitting an unbranded one, it would be worth fitting Stihl rings on it as I have had some let loose on me and don't trust them any more - Caber rings are also very good.

Make sure ALL the aluminium transfer has been taken off, the bore is Nikasil or chrome plating so a convential hone is bad news, some guys use a soft hone but I prefer Acid and light use of wet and dry paper.

I generally have a high rate of success and have had some relly bad ones brought back to life for around half the cost of a new OEP P&C:thumbup:

Many examples on my "Whats on my Bench" thread

Ebay - Tesgol, Leon Danikrops Greek and Max Moto Latvia - all decent traders. If you can't get one, PM me and I will let you have a contact in Germany who gets Golf ones in!

Just to let you know Spud, I rebuilt this saw and after a new carb kit and a tune/clean its absolutley mint, im made up, thanks for youre advice

No worries, glad you fixed it, it is what the forum is all about and if members get really stuck, I can usually give it a going over that gets the saw back to earning money for a decent cost.

Good luck with it:thumbup:
