Another set of goalposts moved and we everyone is supposed to know. Other such things would have a legal obligation to notify all concerned in writing.

How is the average working man supposed to know? Work by day, google traffic law by night! You might as well be a solicitor/lawyer specializing in traffic law instead.

Good of you to post, should of been done by those concerned!!!!!

I think Pete is out with the date, I am sure it's more than 15 years so the posts have been where they are for a loooooong time, and you are supposed to know because it says it on your driving licence.

"those concerned" couldn't have posted it because the Internet didn't exist then.:confused1:

I'm sure the little code that signifies the 8250kg MAM didnt exist before 1st Jan 1997, and the old paper licences don't have it.

Anyone with a paper licence care to check?

No need, just checked and it was 97, seems a lot longer than that, I feel old now.

I finally crumbled and sent off the old paper licence for an updated photocard. I dont have a passport and therefore no legal ID that is acceptable. Its becoming a ballache to sort out finances, move money acrross accounts, re invest money without photo ID.i find it ridiculous that I cant even move and use my own money without it, and am treated like a criminal because I cant "prove" my ID, even though I have birth and marriage certificates (death cert not issued yet:001_rolleyes:) paper DL, tax papers, utility bills all to prove I exist legitimately.

The solution to this Andy is to not have any money.... use twigs and berries for currency, job done... :thumbup1:

I had to get mine done in the end, couldn't open a company bank account without it as the directors record at Companies House had my middle name and all my other ID did not. No current passport so it was a right hassle. It didn't cost me anything though as it's free if you are going from paper to plastic (aside from £5000 in £1 coins for the photos at Morrisons of course).

Another thing I got caught with recently was that we sold a truck at auction. We handed over all the paperwork and just got the yellow bit back as you do when you sell at auction. 6 months later we get fined because the new owner had left it on the road untaxed! We could prove we sold it at auction but we didn't get the confirmation of new keeper from DVLA and apparently if you don't get that within 3 weeks or so you are obliged to inform DVLA otherwise it is YOU who are in the wrong. I had no idea about this. They wanted us to pay the back tax as well but I told them I just wouldn't and they would have to take me to court as I didn't think they could get me to pay tax on a vehicle I could prove I didn't own. So I 'got away' with the fine.

Now the point about this is that it's all in the paperwork but these days we get so many reams and reams of paperwork that it would be impossibe to read and remember it all.

It's just another example of too many civil servants finding new and insane ways to prise money out of the private sector to pay their wages and gold plated pensions.

Easiest way around this is to downplate your lorry by 250kg to 7250, so your mam is then 8250.

Just a bit of paperwork and a sticker to change under the bonnet last time I did this.

That reminds me, must get round to doing my current lorry..:blushing:

It is not that simple now..

Downplate – Iveco Daily 65C @ 6500kgs to 6000kgs for a GTW of 8250kgs

Thank you for your enquiry concerning the downrating of your vehicle.

Downplating requires that a physical alteration is made to the vehicle and the

most cost effective method is to reposition the suspension bump stop to reduce

the operating travel of the suspension both front and rear. This involves a

calculation in which the deflection of the roadsprings determines the reduction

in travel required.

The calculation, a justification and a Dtp form, numbered VTG10 are submitted

by us to VOSA at Swansea. On clearance by the Technical Dept at VOSA,

instructions are sent to your local Goods Vehicle Test station to call the vehicle

in for examination.

In the meantime, we consign to you, on receipt of payment, a conversion kit

and fitting instructions designed specifically for the particular vehicle. The kit is

despatched to you by UPS Next Day services. You should allow approximately

1½ - 2 Hours for fitment.

The cost to your company is £312.00 (£260 + VAT)

To allow me to De-rate your truck I need some details from the vehicles :-

• Copy of plating certificate VTG7T - with tyre sizes (or Type Approval)

• How many leaves you have front and rear (main & helpers )

• Shape of the Bump Stops front & rear

• Which Goods Vehicle Testing Station you would like the vehicle tested

at

• Covering letter with Company Name & Address

• The laden weight of the trailer to be towed (weigh ticket required) or a

copy of the plate on the trailer

• The overall unladen weight of the vehicle (weigh ticket required)

They could post by royal mail back then though! For example when sending tax reminders out annually to holders of appropriate licences. Most truckers or bus drivers would find out this way and tell coleagues by word of mouth,.Same goes for changes in drivers hour regs. etc etc. The many other changed regs. Ive held a LGV C+E for 17 years and they have never notified me once unless they did with digicard.

We know you love to be up to date on transport law Treequip. But most truck drivers I know prefer to go home and leave work in the long days they do at work.

Im not interested in following up a debate, its only my opinion after all.
