I'm interested in this. My disco is the 200tdi and it's above 200k it's got a new head on it and starts no problems in the morn even when it's freezing, starts after two turns of engine. Have heard some things about the 300tdi so I went for the 200tdi. It's been well looked after by old owner so it's top notch. Got some rust in the boot but nothing major and I can easily fix in a dry day.

So the blocks normally last a long time but the heads can go????

The 200 and the early 300 were essentially the same engine untill they developed the 300 a little.

How long it lasts will depend largely on how it is treated, regular oil changes are key as are cam belt changes.

The heads and gaqskets are pretty good, if the head goes it's likely the engine has been too hot, you only get to boil them once.

I did notice on mine when I brought it that there was a water leak on the pump, but it wasn't coming from the mating faces it was coming from the fan shaft. I'm thinking maybe it overheated before so blew the head, hence the new head. Still new pump fitted £70 spent and a couple of hours to fit. Temp gauge goes to halfway and stays there. No oil leaks, good on fuel, only spews out a big puff of blackish smoke on startup then it's clean all the way.

I'm happy with my 200tdi and unless something drastic goes wrong I'm sticking.

Oh and it's a 1990 disco with over 250k on clock and the chassis is perfect not one spot on it. Covered in underseal done by previous, all exept for a clunk if I change gear at slightly the wrong time from first to second.
