hi, i have just bought a second hand splitter, it works fine but when it has split the log the you let go of the handle and the ram returns and the engine stalls, the old splitter i had did not do this. is there a problem with the valve or is it piped up wrong:confused1: any ideas would be great.

Could be a few things but essentially what sounds like is happening is once it's fully returned it's still trying to pump oil into the cylinder.

 

If it's a mass produced one, then there's a chance something's amiss on the anti crush device. If it's a home made one then chances are there's somethign amiss in the valve or it's had the wrong valve fitted.

The valve is detented to the position that retracts the ram, if it's a proprietary bend there could be a kick out device missing, this would stop the ram at the desired height.

sounds like to me it maybe the pressure relief valve stuck, or set at too high a pressure. Resulting in the engine stalling before the valve has returned to the neutral position.

That is just an up and down valve, it's what's going on at the back of the picture that's interesting, the rod with the collar on it is probably part of a limit system, stand further back and take some more pictures
