when we cut down 2 large burr elms, the wood merchant wouldnt even take 3 trunks, 2 inc root balls of 10ftx2-3ftdia of walnut for free :( something to do with the russians flooding the market (this was 18month ago)

wood turners would be best bet

it makes great firewood, its like ash. seems terrible, but up with us firewood split is about 120 quid a ton. woodturners only pay in beer i find. it depends if you want the best money, or what is best for the wood.

i was told it was the roots that made the best gun stalks:confused1:is this true?

I was told purdeys would give an armed escort for a decent walnut rootball, another myth exposed!

I recently sold 3 large elm butts and some seconds and only got £300 quid for them luckily i didnt do the job for the timber like i originally was going to as most of the trees where mush inside!

yeah its the root balls thats best for gun makers-and a few feet above ground, as the grain in the rootballs swirls about and looks pretty:001_tongue:

split woods about that down here too, but the couple of wood turners i know, i give wood to for a favour in return basis, including buttering up the girlfriends old man:001_smile:
