Planting after stump grinding...

Hi there,

Just wondering what the best approach would be to replanting after stump grinding, where a conifer hedge has been removed and ground, and grindings left on site. There's plenty of soil amongst the grindings. Was going to give it a while to settle, rake it level again and then plant away with a bit of compost aswell.....

Is this ok? and would adding any bone meal etc be worth while?

Cheers :)

I would suggest that the grindings be removed and the holes refilled with topsoil , then let the ground settle for at least 2 months , then replanting . I say this because the sites where the stumps have been ground will subside considerably (pretty much completly to the bottom of where the grinder has been ) , also stump grindings dessicate very fast and allow air movement through the sites ( alot more freely than is correct ) and also the bacteria (Psudonomas i think ) will cause denitrifaction during the first six months of decompasition .

I have replanted leylandii directly into very woody grindings on the same day the previous conifers came out and they did fine, not ideal I know and they may have done better with more prep but there were no signs of Ill health for a couple of years at least.

Have they since deceased lol

Not as far as I know, it was very local to our yard and I worked there for a good few years and never heard of any come back on it.

I'd imagine that after a couple of years the grindings would be rotten enough for the roots to get into.
