is there any chain available that cuts stones as well as wood:confused1:

I have a very large ash stump to remove that has grown around stones, i need to cut it down before i can try to grind it. it is 36" high and 36" wide. it is at the top of a wall on a terrace, no access for large grinder or any size digger from ground level it will be about 80ft. any ideas??

You can buy tungsten carbide chain but it's not cheap.

you'll wreck a carbide chain trying to get through stone! hook up with mendiplogs when he gets a hydraulic set up and use an abrasive chain.

Not really my subject but generally builders use diamond tipped chain on specialised saws that use water as a coolant - seen them come up on ebay listed as ICS concrete cutters I believe.

 

I am sure some of the other guys will know more - what are you intending on cutting?

Just read the full post - not much help really, think it will be a case of digging out as much of the stone as possible and then using a crap chain and bar to do the work, solid tip bar may be a good option if you have an old one!

Cheers mate, problem is the stone is inside as well, I am thinking putting a big price on it to include a new bar and a couple of chains and just plodding away at it for a couple of days, the customer needs it out as the are building steps into the wall where the steps are so they have to come out, all digging is by hand as no size digger can get in, it's an awful situation where the stump is.

Get some cheap labour and a couple of mauls . Is it far gone enough to try digging around then rocking it out with the aid of a good winch?

The problem with winching is there is nowhere to anchor to, on the low side it could be anchored but if it comes out it will drop 80ft, i will get some pics as its a horror. I took the tree down 6 months back and I get work off the client so I don't want to turn it away.

I've seen those diamond stone cutting chains and although they sound cool all it is is little sand sized flecks of diamond on the back of the tooth - they would not cut wood and with the water they use as lube will make a lot of mess.

 

Carbide will disintegrate when it hits stone...

 

I'd just buy a good few chains is the cheapest option.
