Cherry Tree Leaf Loss

Yes, we have been seeing this every where, in Northumberland, looking on forum to see if others have noticed this problem.

Drove to coast yesterday to price work, and every single cherry tree looked like your photo, all up A69/A1 and through towns etc, young old, roadside and gardens. Worked on a large cherry in Hexham recently and it was the same. Cannot identify any reason, thought it was to do with late frost.

 

There are a lot of cherries in Ashington and surrounding areas that have been affected too. Trees have had a hammering this year a lot of horse chestnuts look like they have bleeding canker and the oaks have powdery mildew. There has also been a lot of cypress aphid causing browning of conifers in peoples gardens

 

Is this the same in other places?? A lot of ill and dying trees?

Noticed the ones near me appear to have had a second flush. Nothing major but look a lot healthier.

They've done similar here too.

 

I wonder if all the ones we have taken down would have flushed up too?

I,ve been recommending they leave the cherries while next year, I reckon they'll just leaf up as normal, they will just show a narrow growth ring for this year when they eventually do have to come down in 40 years or so (-;

Caterpillars have been rife round here and cherries have been hit hard, one thing I have noticed is that on most of them the tip or exposed branches are less affected

 

The sheltered lower portions of the crown have no leaf whilst the tips look ok

 

This would suggest to me that the caterpillar, which hangs on a silk, thread didnt like the exposed part of the trees, plus early on the leaves were showing signs of being munched on

 

I am convinced it is an epidemic of these caterpillars that has caused many cherries round here to be sparce

 

Yes its not just cherry, but most fruit plums etc.

 

Its aphids as soon as the sun came out last week the new growth has been un affected. Leave alone and hope for a less humid wet year next.
