Just read DH post, sounds good to me but maybe on x hispanica rather than cerris.

 

I get that the leaves don't look a-typical for cerris, but if these are the galls of Andricus grossulariae, as I understand, they only grow as the 'gooseberry' type on cerris.

Thanks for the clarification. I don't fully understand the Andricus lifecycle, they need alternate cerris and robur or something like that. Maybe there is enough cerris in x hispanica to allow use a salternate host, but the leaves in the initial picture could just as soon be cerris. It is a big old tree in an avenue so if it's a hybrid it's likely to be a deliberate one rather than a natural one so I suppose it's going to be pure cerris or pure(!) x hispanica.

I will look out for gooseberry galls, I have never seen them in Scotland maybe they haven't arrived yet.

I concur with David, didn't even think about looking for galls! That'll teach me:lol:

What about a Zelkova? By the way thanks for the posts everyone - David those galls tricked me big time!! Very embarrassing indeed to miss that!!!!!! I have no more pictures but if anyone is going to Bicton I can tell you exactly where it is. Through the stone entrance from the Italian Garden to the Fernery. It is a massive and very impressive tree!

I looked at Sorbus too Tony but the leaves did not convince me. Good stabs tho!. Come on Rob you can't be beaten - not on this one. I live too far away for a revisit....

I did think zelkova but the fruits don't quite look right, there are a few species though.. Have a look on google for the aforementioned celtis and phillyrea species..

 

I've not had time to sit and look through my books and records over the weekend but I will at some point this week:biggrin:

My guess is its galls on a lucombe oak. Lots of lucombe oak around here and I've seen loads of galls so far this year. Mild winter

I have just inspected a massive Lucombe Oak in Bristoil area with exactly the same berries. So think it is a Lucombe Oak
