I don't have the professional appearance to do that though; if I'm only a bit cheaper than a professional company then people would'nt choose me. I'm only talking about the odd job here and there, "my nan wants her 30ft sycamore reduced" etc, so not saying I regularly go out and do work silly cheap, just enough to keep me going to invest in equipment/tickets/rent. Of course I'd love to charge more but in reality I probably would'nt get the work. Anyway it's a pee in the ocean, I've probably done 6 private jobs in the last 12 monthes. Reading back some of my posts I realise I sound incredibly pessimistic lol but I just accept how it is for someone in my position and it's not meant as a grumble, hence why I've gone about doing all I can to boost my career elsewhere.

Thanks Andy

Mmmmmm OK i kinda get your point but i would look at it differently.

Can you reduce that 30ft sycamore as good as the next firm? yes? why be so much cheaper?

Next time you go in and look at something on the side - turn up confident with your smart chainsaw trousers on and price the job, dont price yourself as you feel your not worth the same as another company (which your not if you take into account staff, machinery etc)

You might not be worth 'as much' - but the job price is the job price and if the quality of work is as professional and as good as the next man then I dont see an issue?

just be careful with insurances if your not self employed, but thats another thread and off subject.

The industry would be better off if EVERYONE who quoted a job quoted it professionally, then the customer would just have to choose contractor and accept tree work is expensive as its specialist.

Whats this professional appearance you talk of? I work at some lovely places, for some very top end professional people, and they respect me for being me. You will become a "professional" as you mature, and I dont mean that in a derogatory way, it just seems to click. Just aim where you want to be, be yourself and do a good job every time, those nice jobs for nice people with nice money will come, one day.

It's the little things that get noticed. We had two sites we tender for next door to each other. We always sprayed the weeds in car park and paths and always cut the hedges every second visit. Little and often keeps things looking good.

We lost one of the sites as the people didn't want to pay us they would rather get one of the tenants to do it and knock some of there rent? Go figure.

Well the site we don't do looks awfull, grass is way too long and he hedge hasn't been touched this year. Plus the weeds are growing and not being taken care off, a hedge overlaps both sites and we are cutting half the hedge and it is showing we're we cut and the other isn't cut.

Small things like doing the extra half hour to clean up good, or sorting some weeding out goes a long way in keeping a place nice.

It's what spreads the word of mouth and this is the best advertising any company can have. IMO

Ha!

Just lost a hedge job to some-ones Uncle...

I bet it NEVER gets done...hhhhh! OR the old boy gives up and expires after 30min due to his pace-maker.

We lose out to firewood hunters from time to time but frankly if others see the incompetence and mess they leave then its all good advertising for the industry.

Another prospective client thought that we where expensive, whilst his neighbour uses us twice a year. Guess who has the hedge thats not been cut for 2 years!

Some people are hard up or just tight with money and will spend huge amounts of time searching for something for nothing whilst the grass grows, a bit like idiots who drive miles to save a penny a litre on fuel...
