You should also be looking at cycle times as well, as the last thing you want is to be waiting ages for the ram to split and then return to its home position. It'll do your head in more than having a splitter with perhaps a bit less pressure and having to slice the odd log with the saw if it won't split first time!

Just my pennies worth!

how much wood will you be getting through??

Currently splitting our annual domestic requirements - heating & hot water - with a good axe.

Keeps the old body going and quite like the challenge of figuring out how best to split the knotty/gnarly bits. The ones that are too much of a challenge go to the barbecue. Find it quite therapeutic after a hard day and very satisfying when feeding the stove

OK so I am a bit round the bend :thumbup1:

PS - not totally silly as the hot water is done by the sun mid March to mid October on average and heating required Nov to Feb.

been looking around at some of these home made jobbys and some look really good ! thinking of getting one of those 13hp hondas and a ram ! , i could weld the rest my self,

Just be realistic about what its actually going to cost you. Its very easy to wear rose tinted glasses when pricing a 'home build' but it all adds up.

It wont be CE marked either if an accident was ever to occur.

Ive got an oxdale 10 ton splitter & run it off a jcb beaver power pack. That way i can use the hydraulic unit for other things & it means i dont have to have the engine right next to where im splitting
