Depending on the inlet pipe layout, diesels if left ticking over for extended periods of time will leave a smoke screen when you accelerate away, it used to do it on my brand new iveco and also my landcruisers

As long as it doesn't do it on short periods and clears within a short time nothing to worry about

If all of your water pipes arent leaking/ split cracked, (I'm sure u said you where losing water in a post?) you might want to look for mayonnaise in your oil nr filler etc or in water.

You also mentioned that you were getting the head skimmed? So I would reckon you are seeing water (white) coming out your back end , yes dean you are right in saying its steam.

Skimmed head may be needed plus or just a new head gasket , it depends and hard to say as it may be a new vehicle to you and has been boiled before etc etc before you owned it.

Just as you bung on fresh green waste on a fire you get white smoke/ steam

Best way is just watch and see what happens to the smoke next time, see if it evaporates quickly into nothing or drifts with the wind and hangs around.

With my motors, which where new or nearly new, the cloud was white smoke and it hung around creating a big smoke screen on the m62

I used to do a car boot at the side of the motorway and left the engine ticking over with the heater on to keep warm and then drive a 100 yards to the motorway and set off down the on ramp to the motorway leaving a smoke screen behind.

I crapped myself the first time it happened till I sussed out what was happening.

The same happened on my Landcruiser Amazon when it was left for an hour and a half ticking over to charge the battery, again when I set off it left a huge smoke screen and that was only three years old and extremely low milage.

If it’s the 500ci engine then like the 330ci engine it uses an end to end water flow for the cylinder head/block therefor there are NO water ports between the head/block only the oil ports, so 330/500ci seldom have head gasket problems.

White smoke after prolonged tick-over/low power use especially if using red diesel is to be expected, as most engines will have had their injection timing set up for DERV, even so dependent on the age of the engine (we are talking bedford 330/500ci here) modern DERV vs. 1970’s DERV has some differences in ignition quality thus timing.

If you start it in the morning do you get a vaporous light smoke that stings your eyes a bit? If so that is normal and is unburnt fuel from slight mistiming vs. a cold engine and it is this that after prolonged tick-over/low power use causes the white smoke as the condensed vapour in the exhaust burns off once you drive off after doing crane work or winching etc etc.
