How come you were using your gear on a rigging course?

 

How come you even have the gear if you havnt done the course?

 

And how come, when the instructor told you it was ok for the wood to hit the bollard, you believed him?

 

Clearly its not ok for a large lump of wood to hit something expensive, ever! Move the bollard, or get the climber to move his cut so it falls away from the bollard (same as moving the bollard) or put it away and chog down the last bit.

 

The whole point of these bollards is to reduce shockloading, and you need space for this, space so you have lots of rope in use and space for the object to fall abit before being stopped.

 

Snatching is a term for not letting stuff run, its outdated and should not be used IMO. Negative blocking is a bit pretentiouse but maybe its more descriptive. Snatching could be taught on rigging courses as its a historically relevant technique, but it refers to topping strops and ropes wrapped round tree trunks, any lowering using blocks and bollards should not involve any "snatching".

thanks for the reply s, i hold cs38/39 and do use rigging stuff when there nothing i cant afford to replace it it goes wrong (fence panels etc..). i am getting training so i can use my rigging kit over targets like houses etc...

As for believing what my instructor said , if i cant believe what i am told what's the point in the training?. I feel tomorrow that i must question anything i am told to do ( will it break my gear), so my gear is safe and that is not really what i expected rigging course to be like

Did they not tell you to turn the capstan to the side? I.e. so the friction devise isn't in the line of fire?

he said its ok you can still use it if you just feed the rope in from end (rather than do mid line attachment)

wot they doing teaching snatching before safe shock absorbing lowering methods?

 

what they doing using the students kit? was it lolered?

 

what they doing setting students up to think kit damage is part of the normal routine? was it lolered after?
