As the stack measures i think????

thats how my seller is pricing it, i started a thread last week about this, i think it works out expensive, a trustworthy member suggested double the cubic meter to get a tonne of cordwood, ie 2 cubic metres of wood = 1 tonne....... i dont think he is far from wrong,

from what i can gather most forestry folk allow a percentage for the air space in a stack, so lets say a stack of mixed hardwood cord that measures 20 cubic metres, should in theory weigh around 10 tonne if it was green oak or beech, less if other wood,

should that stack be priced on 10 cubic metres if a 50% air allowance is taken into consideration?

if anyone else can add any input into this im sure alot of people besides myself would be appreciate it!!!

thats exactly how i've bought it before.. although they measure the bays on the trailer then take 50% off for air gaps..

my cousin just bought 4 artic loads ash that was roadside.. they measured the stack and took 45% off for gaps..

Roadside stack prices around us are approx £10 m3 for softwood and £20 m3 for hardwood which equates to approx £40 per tonne and a delivered price of £50 per tonne for hardwood.

I'm paying 20.00 per m3 for hardwood standing which equates to 20.00 per tonne. Ash and syc 20.00 per m3 which is 3/4 tonne to m3 so around 15.00 per tonne. I buy all my timber by stack measure as i move the wood myself there is always an allowance for air usually 50-60% depending on size and straightness of wood.

I can only presume the 20.00 m3 quoted is the whole stack without the air taken off. Back to the original thread 40.00 per m3 would be right if you were buying beech with 50% taken off for air. Lets also remember that different parts of the country have different cord prices as can be seen by earlier threads.

Someone posted a good thread last year on converting metres to tonnes which would be worth a re-look. Lets also remember that forestry is at times an unusual science. It takes years to know whats going on and at times difficult to keep track cos its usually all in someones head and won't conform to the book!! Agriculture you can look it up but timber prices well?
