Advice urgently needed

I'm 21 and I'm a second year Mechanical Engineering student at Cardiff University. I hate it. After a year of it affecting my health I have been diagnosed with severe Depression and Anxiety.

I made a mistake by going to university, I need and love to work outside.

I can't face sitting any more exams, but with little accreditation for my work so far I need to do something else.

Can anyone on here reccommend a route into tree work that might suit me?

A day release course or an apprenticeship perhaps.

I'm a quick learner and all my grades were good, I just need to not be in university, but following a career path that I want.

Also I'm no stranger to woodland, brought up on a farm (its that that im missing) this last year I've been selling logs, kindling and briquettes and doing quite well, but its not a business I could make a living from.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I'm sorry to hear your situation.

Perhaps you could take a year out?

Countryside jobs on line may have some seasonable vacancies in your area to tide you over. There are farmers looking to employ keen reliable drivers for their harvest time and your mechanical skills may well prove very favorable.

Personally I would not completely give up on the mechanical side as this WILL stand you in good stead in the future.

It's a difficult one mate. I think everyone who goes away to uni feels the way you do sometimes, it's a daunting task (especially with a demanding course). This time of year is worse with those 20 credit module exams looming.

Which course are you doing is it BEng or MEng, if its BEng then you'll have a year left infact less than a year because contact time is less than 25 weeks.

You've invested a significant amount of time and money already and at the end you'd have a quality degree.

However if it's affectng your health then nothing is worth affecting your health over. I was at cardiff and at times I struggled just with the volume of work (and didn't particularly like living n a city esp when you come from carmarthenshire), 110 started my course 60 graduated, so you won't be the first to chnage their mind.

Where did the other posts go?

Errr..... my fault I started this thread on the training forum as well, wanted a broad range of views.

I sort of had a year out, I failed an exam in my first year so last year I worked on a farm whilst I re-sat that exam, I enjoyed last year, which makes this year even harder!

could you post a link to that web site please?

I'm doing a BEng with a year in industry. the year is to be done at an oil refinary in an office with literally no windows!

I'm from Carms myself, moved to pembs a few years ago.

It is affecting my health, I've been ill for almost nine months now, the only time Im well is whilst Im at home on holidays, like I am at the moment. the thought of going back on sunday is making me ill again.

Whereabouts were you living in carms?

I presume your year in industry is in the refinery down by you?

Whatever you decide I'm sure you'll do alrite you must be bright to get onto your course and your only 21 you've got plenty of time.

I was between Llandeilo and Cross Hands, on Pant Y Bara Farm, in a village called Milo.

went to Ysgol Tre-Gib for a year or so.

Moved to Haverfordwest then but I'm back and forth to Carms quite a lot still.

I'm going to the refinary in pembroke its about 15 miles from us.

where abouts are you based Rich D?

I'm 3 times your age and a dropout from UCW Swansea, been happy with forestry contracting for the first 20 years but fairly deperate for the last 15, now desk bound.

My advice is get the qualification. Plenty of time to change direction after.

Cardiff engineering dept was big in biomass combustion, biomass to energy is part of treework.

We partnered them in an interesting project to run a gas turbine, it worked but they got all the dosh and nothing left to commercialise it.
