posted this on hort week as well but recently two people have told me they are going to remove all non native trees from their gardens, some of them are quite big!!!When at college I was told britain was the envy of gardeners the world over due to our moderate climate and being able to grow a wide range of species. So where does this non native thing come from?who decides what is native and with climate change will some plants become native? Is it historical like everything pre roman here is native or pre ice age,who decides?

True natives (all 33 or so) are deemed to be, if they were here by natural propagation, after the last Ice age.

No one really knows how climate change will affect survival strategies of "native" trees.

Imo, the best thing to do will be to hedge your bets and plant a mix of natives and mediteranian.

One of the London Boroughs is planting Olives as a street trees.

Or you could just let the natives adapt to any climatic changes just like they did in the medieval warm period... :D

On the definition of native - its currently based on the trees that naturally colonised the country after the last glacial maximum approx 11500 years ago. Mainly though its a cultural thing (just listen to the shiver in the rabid old ladies voice when she talks about 'foreign' trees!). Consider this; if we entered an ice age tomorrow and glaciers flattened all the countries trees. Would you still call English Oak native even if it didn't naturally re-appear???
