  5. found a "king dick" adjustable spanner in a crotch about 5mtr up a lime tree in ambleside,an old green marble deep inside an old beech in ulverston and a metal tree guard inside a huge poplar in kendal.has any one else heard the tale about a sawmill in wales ripping a butt down and finding the remains of a flintlock rifle inside?
  6. many years ago I took an old ded elm down in bowness,a guy who owned a jewellry shop nearby wanted some branches to hang jewellry off in his window."I will see you right" he says. so I cut him some nice bits, carry it over to his shop and he gave me fifty pence!!Could not believe it.
  7. thanks for that bud, could do with a bit of mediterrainian weather at moment though, had to use diff lock on the old daihatsu to get to work.! regards keith
  8. posted this on hort week as well but recently two people have told me they are going to remove all non native trees from their gardens, some of them are quite big!!!When at college I was told britain was the envy of gardeners the world over due to our moderate climate and being able to grow a wide range of species. So where does this non native thing come from?who decides what is native and with climate change will some plants become native? Is it historical like everything pre roman here is native or pre ice age,who decides? keith:confused1:
  9. certainly have, that danarm saw on the cover was one of the first saws I ever used no chainbrake and the thread had gone on the air filter cover so it used to rattle about!Seemed like I did nothing but take down ded elms in those days.Makes you feel old. regards keith
  10. our lungs are designed for air anything else going in has got to be considered potentially harmful, talking to a tutor at myerscough last year he was saying wear a mask when chipping due to airborne pollution on the leaves.Have heard of nasal cancer in furniture factories (foreign hardwoods)and from pine pollen, sheep can get cancer from bracken spores(anyone for a spot of bracken whipping?)What with this and HAVS,MSD and RIDDOR who said working outside was healthy? The thing is to be informed, get the PPE and use it,better safe than sorry and hope we havent already done ourselves harm. The asbestos situation is a tragic example. cheers now keith
  11. very good; I think it has to be stihl or husqvarna if you are serious about the job, also am reminded of the old saying you never let anyone borrow your saw, wife or dog as they all come back "ruined" .regards to all keith
  12. your're making me feel old, first brand new saw I had was a 254,my local dealer had trouble getting parts for an old husky strimmer of mine so you might struggle,my first saw was bought from a husky dealer who hired them out,you see the odd stihl at car boots but have never trusted them.I have a husky 266XP new in 1989 still same barrel piston, carb etc,can anyone beat that?
  13. quite right, sales of woodstoves up 40% the terrace I live on is like a timberyard at weekends, with all sorts of wood inc pallets being converted by different folk along my street once it was just me "the poor relation" that burnt logs, all mine is in backyard undercover, barb wire and lock on gate.
