How do you know they are going to fail? My 110 has started making some horrid grinding / juddering noise when pulling away. Could this by a UJ on its last legs?

Ty usually when your coming off the throttle you will hear it worse-park it up out of gear and give props a twist see if there's any play. I never bother changing UJs now just put fresh HD props on.:thumbup1:

I have a Disco 200, did 274,000 miles with it, never replaced a UJ anywhere.

I now have a TD5 Disco, bought it at 112,000, now done 235,000, never replaced a UJ anywhere.

Wife has a TD5 Defender, 112,000, never done one on that either although we did need to change the rear axle after a diff failure.

My Disco's do a fair bit of work off road but not the extreme off road stuff you get on these rallys. Most days I do two hours of gamekeeping work with it.

Not had one go on my td5 in 3 or four years since I had it,only greased them a couple of times too:blushing:

My 300 did knock out a couple in that time, but I used to wade the 300 frequently,(ford by my field).

Thing is I wont wade the td5 as its always towing,& the tipping pump is mouted on the chassis.

If your uj is warm through use & you wade it in nice muddy water, the cooling effect of the water on the uj,(& axles for that matter),will cause them to suck in water, this can be a reason for early failure.

Mine go before six months usually on any 110 i've had but do tow every day. I was told that whatever you try the grease will not get to all four parts of the yoke so some will wear quicker than others.

Just remember that the older defenders with raised diffs must have the ujs replaced as made not in line as will be out of balance. The td5 has flat angle diff so the ujs are in line.

Hi all how long does your UJ last on your 90/110/130 land rover I grease every 4/6.weeks and they last 6 months no more how long do yours last on the td5 they lasted years we fit hardy spicer so there good UJ thanks all Jon

Hi Jon, we've been suffering similar problems with a customers 90 300tdi,lasting about 5-6 months. When you change them do you remove the complete shaft or just the half your replacing the uj? Check the alignment of the joints, think they're ment to be staggered to reduce vibration(can't be sure without checking). Also over greasing when new causing the seals to pop out creates problems,I tend to fill the caps with grease when assembling with the grease nipple out and refitting grease nipple last but not greasing with grease gun, keeps the seals in place. Failing that try a uj from landrover they seam to last a bit longer. Seems from everyones posts that some last, some don't. Might be worth checking the landrover forums?

HI TYZ thanks for that mate we take the complete shaft off and mark it in a line but one we do not do is more grease in when we put in new ones next time we will fit TD5 props they have larger UJS by 20mm we do not pop the seals out when grease as you said grit will get in thanks jon
