Usual cause of "claw finger" as I like to call it is overuse of gripping and squeezing muscles of the forearm.Simple exercise to rectify this is to wrap few elastic bands round fingertips and open the fingers up against them aim for15-20 reps each hand for two sets four times a week,if anyone suffers from tennis elbow this also can help aid recovery.

Proper muscular balance and strength is integral to having a good pain free body whilst workig a physical labour job.

Nearly every arb or forester wth a bad back has at some point damaged it by lifting somthing more than there body can currently handle at that given time strengthen the lower back and abs and hey presto no back issues, most elbow and wrist complaints stem from same thing too much gripping holding and chucking without having strong enough and balanced forearm musculature.

My hands do the same.

Its tree work - knackers the body.

I get my hands closing up as if i am holding a rope. Must be muscle memory.

Martyn, all you seem to do is go on and on about how tree work is detrimental to the body. Yes we know it is.

You seem like a keen lad on the fitness front, training etc. You have either got to find a way of getting around it by working smarter or harder.

Or why not give it up? As that is what your body seems to be saying.

Unfortunately mate, you got to like it or lump it.
