Sorry to all the hand-wringing, well-meaning do-good types, but this is the 9th most dangerous job in the UK, you need a disciplined crew who can be trusted to carry out their jobs safely whether or not you are on site. And if they cannot be trusted to be honest about their actions in your absence, get rid.

One,

The guy made a silly mistake...... A bolocking, made to clean it up and some piss taking the next day. We all make mistakes.

 

Two,

Lying about it, To my mind instant dismissal.

If he is new he might just be over enthusiastic. Though to be honest if he hadn't sorted out the chip by the time you got back or had a decent excuse ready he probably is too stupid to employ.

You cant sack them for that, that is harsh! Lying though does annoy me, makes you always think about leaving them on there own next time. Ive not tightened the shoot enough on the chipper and it spun round ans spat chip all over the drive, no one got hurt, just get the blower / brush out and clean it up.

while sacking him clearly gets rid of him as a problem, am wondering why none of the other staff noticed wht had happened ? Not suggesting they should have grassed him up but... could they have told him to stop being a knob and then tell him to clear it up asap?
