To Coronet or Not to Coronet, now that is a question

Sean, it's part of our (City of London Open Spaces - Hampstead Heath) local Tree Policy to re-establish this habitat here at our site.

I've instigated (5 years now) a database of when they were created, what the targets are, when they were last inspected & record if they get re-reduced due to condition or target change.

We have recently contracted an Invert Surveyor, to carry out an audit on a range of the old & new Sdt's

Dying alder I persuaded LA to leave in a town park. Tree is leaning over the pond. Should throw up some fungi as it degrades hopefully. We did this back in April.

Nice piece of work there G.

Keep an eye out for Alder brackets ( Inonotus radiatus) for me and the Hama,

something we'd both like to catch fresh.

It looks as though it's leaning toward that bit of water?

Is it completely away from targets then?

See there's a few plunges n'all :001_cool:

Dead roadside Beech with Meripilus & Chondrostereum.

Left as Standing dead timber, coro'd with the odd fracture.

On to the data base to be inspected anually.

Mix of remarks from the locals, and the odd funny from passing cabbies.

.

Then the Merip came back to say hello...........

Yes we do....

The tree had been topped years ago using a mewp.... all tops were cut to stumps and lateralbranches left unreduced. The double stemmed tree has a big crack and was about to fail, it was put down as a fell...I talked them into doing a heavy retention and bracing. All branches that were reduced and were bigger then 1/3 of what they were cut back to were coronetcuts. The stem was cleaned from shoots and whole crown brought into a natural shape.

Will follow up next year and keep an eye on this fella and see how it develops.

Before and after.

Did you source & install the bat box Ian?

If so, was it the clients idea?

.

No the clients had, had a wildlife evaluation because they re did the quay and it was identified as potential bat habitat. They got the bat box from the broads authority of all places.:thumbup1: Still had to get the local 'Batman' out to check the box before we even went near the tree.
