I was told on my cs30 that oregon use two types of steel (?) in their files ones great and the others pants. Not sure if it tells you on the pack or wether its a lucky dip situation.

I have to admit I havent tried to tell the difference, Im still a newbie and on my first pack of files.

I can get a file to last me around 2 chains. After each tooth I tap the tip of the file off something hard and every few teeth I pull the file backwards through a cloth (mainly the inside of the elbow closed round it on free arm if wearing long sleeves) I dont push the file hard into the tooth either, just nice easy strokes and take file out of tooth when pulling back the file.

A gutter downspout bracket. Made of iron. Covered with 30-40 years of growth. It took a chunk out of one tooth so they all had to come down. Not happy!

Sounds like someone had CS30 ringing in there ears recently

i use a File Carder on mine, have a look in Axminster power tools to see what they look like then try your local hard wear shop and see if they sell them. cost about £2/3

an engineer told me to get some chalk on the file before you use it,

then the file doesn't get clogged up; seems to work, however i still go through too many files, and am wondering what the alternatives are. i have used the big oregon bench mounted grinder, how long do their grinder wheels last for ?
