I was pulled and weight on the M6 just over five years ago, they said nothing about me being on the motorway or running on red.

 

HMRC have ammended the rules, first phase was April 1 2007, second phase April 1 2008. VOSA have not as a rule been interested in fuel issues, the Police and HMRC can and will dip your tank- the new one is taking a soot swab from your exhaust, with or without your knowledge to determin the presence of rebated fuel

if i was you giles i would sell that unimog and buy a nice merc 4x4 vario 7.5 toner and get it ag spec.

What if its registered as an "agricultural vehicle"?

 

Cropspayers can run on red and carry a load.

 

As do combinedharvisters.

 

For HMCE Ag vehicle is the same as tractor.

 

Carrying a load is moving goods for hire or reward.

 

A crop sprayers “load” is permitted because the load (spray fluid) is something immediately associated with the operation of the vehicle.

 

Most mewp’s can run on red and you can use them to carry those things immediately associated with the operation of the vehicle, so your saws, TM kit, and such like are allowed but if you put arisings on you need to change the fuel and possibly the registration.

 

A combine has a receiving tank and while it can travel from job to job with grain on board it’s hardly a viable transport option. It also makes economic sense to have the combine mowing.

Why!! parts are not going to be any more expensive on his mog. You could get it ag spec and attempt to register agricultural. But getting 3 point linkage and hydraulic set up on a vario would cost an arm and a leg anyway. If you did not get the vario ag you then have to pay on operators licence, mot tax, white diesel, then get your class one so you tow a large trailer. The price of these every year go a long way to serviceing. That unimog that Giles has bought will virtually had every single part changed on it since 1984. Plus another reason people buy mogs is cause they like them, there fun to have and they make you feel good driving to work,

As i understand it arb work does not actually come under the red derv flag as it is classed on its own away from forestry

That was an article in Forest Machine Journal with a miss -represented quote from Customs and Excise. The Palimentary White Paper regarding the revised regs say arboricultural work is not forestry and therefore is not excempt from duty on fuel
