hitch climber

Slowly easing your weight onto a loose hitch can allow it to slip, I find that with a VT, but as Drew says if you drop onto even the loosest hitch quickly though they will usually grab... certainly enough to prevent you hurtling to the ground at terminal velocity...

Yep, this is my point i like my hitch to free up easily, this does mean with easy movements it can slip or fail to grab instantly, but I doubt it would allow you to hurtle to the ground, at the same time i'm not going to test this theory out. Sweet jesus you guys climb on Lockjacks thats just shady!

Dude, read about Cary Gibson's fall. It can happen to anyone so easily, it's a good reminder to us all.

Climb on a lockjack for a week and you'll see it can not allow a free fall.

That's why I am asking the question?

I tie mine with long tails, 3/4 4/3 different cord has different effects ... But with long tails there is a lot of sit back but the hitch will grab its just how comftable you feel with the sit back.... It's the panic grabing that causes problems , I'd you grab the hitch it will open and you go in free fall!

People should use what they feel safe with at the end of the day but I'm not believing the hype the Sj is the be all and end all of climbing.

:001_tt2: just me pulling your chain, and it can allow freefall for in-experienced climbers as there is no anti-panic function unlike most rope access tools, i know this for a fact as I work with a guy who got kicked out of a college after he free fell on a lockjack in panic descent. This does not mean it is a dangerous tool!

Has anyone managed to set up a h.c/v.t that self tends and grabs without a assist now and again? Iv tried so many cord lengths more wraps less braids etc and the best out come I can get is 3 wraps and 1 braid but like I say it needs help to grab. I noticed when I watched the friction hitchery video the climber pushes his v.t up to help it grab.

hey mate,

i am the guy climbing in frictionhicthery and yes your right i did have to push up the hitch to make it fully grab but as drew mentioned it would grab under fast descent. the hitch also is a knut not a VT. we had abit loose setup on this tree, for going back up and it self tending as it did. as other wise joe would been way faster.

Now i use a variation of the VT, which doesn't self tend but grabs every time. can run very fast, doesn't lock up, no twisting and once it bites you can break it free with ease.

This will improve your climbing so much, as you know everytime your hitch will grab. yes if you set your hitch loosey it will self tend better but it will slow you down having too touch your hitch everytime and will knock your confidence in your gear holding and slow you down again.

my advice to you is, use a hitch that bites everytime and in doing this will make you a better, quicker and safer climber. there are ways to tend it, espically when your in a tree hold above and below hitch and walk in, pantin and groudies.

i attached a pic of my setup. Cheers Matt Glen
