There's 2 sorts of NI, employee and employers.

You need to start with what you can afford to pay then work back from there to see if it ends up at a decent take home wage. You also need to take into account their tax code which can have a [minor] bearing on what you need to deduct.

Sick pay only needs to be statutory sick pay, which you claim back.

 

I was looking at employee costs the other day, and reckoned adding employers NI, holiday pay and bank holidays came to around £3000 to employ someone, compared to having someone self employed.

 

You would need to pay a self employed person more than an employee though, but I would rather do that than give it to the government!
