I know, these scientists nowadays... what do they know?!

They do some lab tests, calculate heat output per cord, take ease of spliting, time of drying and all other key factors into equation. And come up with these silly charts... My neighbour knows better for sure, because he was told by his neighbours auntie who tried various logs herself

Exactly, they do some lab based tests in a controlled environment with simplifying assumptions made - in the real world with so many variables, how can they possibly say their results are a true reflection.

That chart is not endorsed by anyone. It looks like something anyone of us could knock up in word if we had too much ash in stock and wait for a civil servant from an over staffed council office to cut and paste.

Absolutely

There are worse charts out there

IMO it misses some species namely cedar which I find seasons quickly and is therefore useful. Also poplar will season quickly if left on its side.

Criticising birch for burning fast then saying was it hazel is great as it burns fast. Make your mind up.

People who know about fires get a bit conoisseur about wood.

A mix is good and you can up and down the burn depending on what you put on.

Good wood burners though make the whole thing a bit pointless as they burn anything especially wood wood. And do I really want to count how many times I have to get up and feed the fire of an evening.

Sometimes the walk down the logpile is refreshing especially in the snow and gives you a chance to have an outside pee which is always best:001_smile:
