Fencing stakes that dont rot required.

Can anybody help out there?

A fencing contractor friend of mine requires 1000 4-5" TD 5'6" long fencing stakes for a coast path job. The problem he has is now that the powers that be (in their infinite wisdom:sneaky2:) decreed that the active ingredient in tanalised timber (arsenic) could no longer be used, stakes are barely lasting 3-5 years before rotting off, this is not acceptable at the best of times, but especially not on this particular project.

Are there any suppliers (in the UK preferably) who can supply a product that will give at least ten years, as used to be the case?

jacksons fencing in kent, they do 25 year warranty but you will pay for the nose, i could supply sweet chestnut posts if your after something a bit more rustic but hard wearing but i reckon the haulage would kill it from kent

got to be either sweet chestnut or robinia i would have thought... just so happens that i'm working on SC stakes etc at the moment, haulage would probably kill it though...

MAybe- but he is possibly looking national. Sweet chestnut would be almost certainly out of the (budget) question, but the haulage MIGHT not be out of the way.......all suggestions welcome thanks:thumbup1:

Your friend needs to ask for use class 4 timber (UC4) this is usually a redwood timber that is Kiln dried before treatment, allowing the chemicals to penetrate much deeper into the stake. Most suppliers should offer this now, many give 15 - 25 years guarantee. He should expect to pay a premium of around 25% over regular timber, but its well worth it.

 

If you cut a regular treated stake and a UC4 timber in half to compare, it becomes obvious that they are different products.

 

The other option would be Micronized timber ( copper treatment ) but this is more suited to playground construction as the treatment is non harmful.

You can get differant grades of treatment for fence posts that are guaranteed. Id opt for post treated to 'HC4' standards wich is a 15 year guarantee. These do come at a price but it is cheaper long term than replacing posts.
