Remembrance/Armistice Day

I'd just like to thank all those who gave up their lives so we have the freedom to moan and whinge about the weather/economy/fuel prices.

In particular, my great-uncle who was captured with the Royal Norfolks and worked on the Burma Railway until he fell ill and died, his brother, who suffered from inhalation of mustard gas in the trenches of WW1, and died at home shortly after his return,and my Grandad shot down in his lancaster over occupied Europe, and my friend Clive, involved in an rta in the Falklands while serving his country.

Totaly concur with your thoughts Andy.

 

How do we get our young generation to become aware of the sacrifices that have been made ?

 

Easy for myself and my boys not to forget, as both my Father and Brother were involved in action in Egypt and the South Atlantic respectively.

 

But society desperately needs a connection with past and ongoing conflicts, rather than just a bit of telly showing a bunch of greys who are so far detached from todays want it now culture.

Truly Appalling loss of life. It's a great shame that we never learn. More young men are destined to die because of the incompetence of politicians. Very sad the way servicemen are treated after they have passed beyond usefulness. Some people forget what they were fighting for. Which is a great insult to our war dead

They can't pass out pins with the poppies anymore because of health and safety. My poppy keeps falling off.

Forget the political bull and just think of our lads and lasses doing their bit all over the world. I was born in a military garrison town and have got friends serving all over the world. Luckily I have lost anyone close.

 

What pees me off more than anything else is when Laura from X Factor gets more news coverage than the gurkha who lost his life recently.

 

You'll never get the younger generations to connect with conflicts past and present as it's so completley alien to anything they know or understand.....sad but true....

We are all very aware at the the cost our kit helmets ropes etc. but the guys and gals who put it on the line every day for Queen and country pay a far greater cost Yes I know they did choose to join up so did I But we should All be proud of them How about a van sticker or something to let the country know we support them Faither Jim

My Father was a 19 year old soldier who was with first troops to enter Belsen during its liberation in April 1945. He sees himself as 1 of the lucky ones having seen the atrosities that war brings not only to the armed forces who are expected to cope with them, but to the inocent men, women and children who are caught up in it. He will never forget and has instilled in me the same respect for those who were not so lucky as he was, be it in past or current conflicts. It is our responsibility to ensure that this respect and rememberance is passed on to our children and that they never forget the sacrifices that have been made for all of our futures.
